Panda Boi is a side music project involving the use of LittleSoundDJ (a program created for using the 8bit sound system of a gameboy to create music) , circuit-bent kids’ toys and old keyboards to create a sound that is completely artificial and dated in the time period we live in. Though the technology might not be new to this present moment, it was created within my lifetime. I hope to create an infusion of noise/experimental sound with a happy dance beat and melody. This project is about fun and enjoyment, the experience of play. The sounds are not of our everyday, some even harken back to a time of Super Mario Bros. and Zelda, or even that basic beat of Pong. It is that sound that lay the foundations of our current lives, our love/hate relationship with technology.
The Mark One was the first computer created by the government to solve problems. To our standards it was an over-sized ( 10′x10′ room-sized) calculator. And as technology advanced so did our need to be entertained. Commodore 64 and Atari were the early computer/video game machines that were produced for the masses. This was the beginning of an alien world full of new sounds and pictures that had not been seen until that day. I am hoping this project is sort of a discovery of that alien world, and a sharing of the excitement.
